RUN 2024
stigma on disabilities.
WHO WE ARE
SPACE Uganda is a non profit, community led organisation reaching out to children with disabilities and their families in marginalized communities in the areas of education, nutrition support, physiotherapy, mobility rehabilitation, raising awareness about their rights and income generating projects. We work to create equal opportunities for these youngsters so that they live a decent and dignified livelihood free from abuse and discrimination.
SPACE Uganda works to empower parents and caregivers to provide a safe and loving space for their child, and also educate communities to value and embrace children with disabilities. We hope to see children with disabilities fully accepted into areas of community and family life in Uganda.
SPACE Uganda is an acronym for Special Programs for Advancement and Community Empowerment Uganda
OUR COMMITMENT TO ACTION
We exist to create inclusive communities where children with disabilities have access to;
EDUCATION
HEALTH
SOCIAL INCLUSION
We believe in nurturing, not displacing. Our children remain in their homes, surrounded by their families while we enhance their environment.
Our major goal
Our major goal at SPACE Uganda is to strengthen the capacity of families to cope with the challenges of raising a child with disability. We believe that children grow best in families. We want to achieve greater acceptance of the child as an individual to have love and a sense of belonging, first as part of the family and second as part of the community.
Our work in numbers
Our approach
We carry out routine house-to-house visits where we visit the child and their families. Home visits act as an effective strategy for delivering support to the children and their families
Our methodology consists of involving parents from beginning to an end as equal partners in the rehabilitation process of the child, we believe the parent carries out much of the work when we are not around, therefore, our emphasis is on training the parents on the different activities the child needs to do.
We teach families about the child’s specific disabilities and provide disability-specific therapies to each child including training on how to implement therapies at home.
We also maintain on going counselling process with parents of children with disabilities in order to sustain their interest and involvement in the continued training and rehabilitation of the child.
With our past experience, we found counselling can help parents overcome issues such as lack of motivation to follow the rehabilitation process, social stigma, difficulties in simultaneously raising a special child with other normal children, financial limitations, etc.
Join us in our mission to break the silence and
stigma surrounding disabilities in our communities!!
Together, we can create a more inclusive and accepting society where children with disabilities are valued and empowered.
