Under this program, we fight misinformation and cultural practices that deny children with disabilities a place in society.
If you ask any parent of a child with a disability about their greatest wish for their child, they will likely say they want a more accepting and welcoming society. Unfortunately, in Uganda, deep-rooted social stigma and misconceptions continue to limit the understanding, acceptance, and integration of children with disabilities within their communities. Many children are still hidden away at home while their parents go about their daily lives, afraid of judgment, discrimination, or lack of support.
To address these issues, we actively engage with local communities, businesses, media organizations, churches, and government agencies, including the police, health centers, and district personnel. Our work focuses on tackling discrimination, abuse, social isolation, stigma, and other challenges affecting children with disabilities.
We addresses the lack of information and harmful myths by conducting awareness sessions for parents to educate them on disability rights and inclusion, conducting community-based projects that encourage acceptance and integration, carrying out mainstream media and social media campaigns to share real stories, change perceptions, and promote inclusion, and also organizing fundraising events that serve as platforms to educate, engage, and advocate for disability rights.
Through this program, we aim to sensitize communities and create powerful awareness campaigns that foster understanding, tolerance, and inclusion for children with disabilities. By addressing misconceptions and educating the public, we help create lasting, positive change in how society views and supports children with disabilities.
At SPACE Uganda, we believe that awareness leads to action, and action leads to change. By challenging stigma, educating communities, and advocating for policy change, we are creating a future where every child—regardless of ability—has the opportunity to thrive.
