Children with disabilities in Uganda face significant challenges in accessing education. These challenges are exacerbated by poverty, inaccessible school environments, and the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, many parents are reluctant to enrol their children with disabilities in school, as they believe it is a waste of time and resources.
To address these challenges, our inclusive education support program offers various initiatives and programs aimed at removing barriers and ensuring that children with disabilities have access to quality education.
One of our primary objectives is to increase equitable access to education for children with disabilities within mainstream and special schools. We work with various schools to build partnerships and encourage parents or caregivers to enroll their children in school.
Our education program provides families with the support they need to afford education for their special needs children. Currently, we support eight children at different schools. The schools are selected by the families to ensure the best fit for each child, while SPACE Uganda coordinates attendance and development with the school.
We also support children in our community to join public schools and advocate for those who are not capable of joining public schools to find a special school that meets their needs.
Sponsor a child
You can choose to sponsor one or more children for education. We have 38 children with disabilities on our waiting list who need education support in mainstream schools. The sponsor a child program assigns you personally to one of the children that need support in school. You will receive an introduction package, which gives you basic details on the child.
